Last weekend I had to opportunity to play in the Vintage Championship at Eternal Weekend. I had a great time getting to play Magic’s oldest format at the largest Vintage tournament in the modern era. Nearly 500 players gathered to battle their Workshops, Bazaars, and Force of Wills against one another!
The deck that I chose to play in this event was an original spin on the classic Mishra’s Workshop archetype: Hangarback MUD. Basically, the deck is just the Kuldotha MUD deck that I wrote about two weeks ago sans all of the KULDOTHA FORGEMASTER package and maximizing on ARCBOUND RAVAGERS and HANGARBACK WALKERS.
I worked on tuning the deck and the sideboard with my teammate Paul Mastriano for this event and our hard work really paid off. He piloted the deck to an impressive Top 4 finish and I earned a 9th place finish. Combined, we had a record of 16-3-1 in swiss play!
Brian Demars – HANGARBACK MUD
9th Place | 2015 VINTAGE CHAMPIONSHIP
2 Chalice of the Void
4 Arcbound Ravager
4 Hangarback Walker
4 Sphere of Resistence
4 Throns of Amethyst
4 Phyrexian Revoker
4 Tangle Wire
3 Phyrexian Metamorph
4 Lodestone Golem
4 Ancient Tomb
4 Wasteland
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Strip Mine
1 Mana Crypt
1 Sol Ring
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
SIDEBOARD
4 Grafdigger’s Cage
3 Tormod’s Crypt
3 Ghost Quarter
2 Batterskull
1 Phyrexian Metamorph
2 Dismember
As you can see, the deck is way more low to the ground than a typical MUD deck. Most of our spells only cost two or three mana which makes it easy to be casting multiple spells and lock pieces per turn which is especially nasty when we have sphere effects in play.
Paul Mastriano will be writing an article on our list here for Vintage Magic very soon so I won’t get any more in depth about the list itself. I will also have a new article projecting the metagame post-champs up very shortly here on the site.
The tournament was a blast and I was very happy with the deck that I played this time around. It is always a little bit disappointing to get 9th in a huge event, but nine out of 500 players is still a very quality finish and getting to see a friend make Top 8 with a deck that I worked on is always awesome.
I’d like to thank Daniel Chang and VintageMagic.com, LLC for sponsoring me and my friends for this event. Also, I’d like to congratulate the new Vintage Champion, Brian Kelly!

Well done, Brian, looking forward to more articles from you and Paul.
At Champs I played the top ranking Forgemaster list from NYSE, but swapped out the City of Traitors and Cavern of Souls for 4 Factories, and they were absolute beasts all day. What was your experience with your Factories, and what are your thoughts on Factories vs. Caverns in a list like this?
